What are pacifiers for? And how do you know if your baby wants/needs one or is just hungry?
I'm not a parent and do not have much experience with children, so I'm not sure. Thanks for any advice!
They are usually used on babies that are very sucky, and need comorting alot, I was told by a doctor to use one for my 3rd baby who had colic and reflux (and then epliepsy etc), to be honest it didnt really stop the colic and reflux but at least it gave us stomthing to do when she cried a lot.
Each baby is very different, and not all need them, my 1st and 2nd had one for a few months, my 3rd had one for a long time (she had a lot of medical issues and was in hosptial a lot) and my 4th I just weaned him off his at 2 1/2 .
My 5th however is 6 mths and hasnt had one, though he is a very sucky baby and comfort sucks before his night time feed for abotu an hour each side, so I have often thought that he might need one, but he sleeps so well afterwards I dont want to push it.
babies with pacifiers dont sleep as soundly and often wake during the night when it falls out so you have to go and pop it back in for them, when theyre a bit older they often put it back in but if it falls out of the cot you have to go and find it for them, and some babies get very used to them.
Babies who are hungry wont suck the dummy they will pop it out and cry, and when you put it back in they will pop it out again and thats when you know they want something to drink.
it is a person decisional to give your baby one, as there are a lot of people who liek to put thier 2 cents in (why does he need that stupid thing in his mouth, hes a big boy) but really my childrens comfort was more important than what other people thought. The only reason I stopped my son using them was mostly because he kept throwing them out of his pram, and in New Zealand theyre not that cheap!!
I have never had any trouble weaning any of my kids from their dummies and none of them are bucktoothed or late to talk because of them.
