making 3d motorbike cake stand up?
I am looking to see if anyone has any ideas on how to make a 3d motorbike cake stand up. I make novelty cakes but im stumpted on how to go about this - i am guessing dowels, just not sure how to position them. Any ideas?
Hi, i think the first answer is probably the best way to go.. I was thinking maybe affix dowels to the cake board, with glue and/or a nail down the middle from underneath. Depending on the thickness of the tyres, they'd need to be in at least two sets of two, and make sure they are spaced the same distance apart as the centre of each wheel. Basically the front wheel would be held up with one group of four dowels about an inch apart all round, and a short distance away where the rear tyre will be, another group of four. Dowels aren't usually affixed to the boards, but I thought/am guessing affixing them would possibly help stop tipping-over , due to the narrow shape of the bike.
As you assemble the cake, the wheels will be held up by the dowels which I'm hoping could be disguised within the wheels/spokes? I'm a novice at 3d cakes if that isn't already obvious lol.. Anyway once you've got the wheels accounted for, from there you'd probably use hidden cake boards to support the higher or heavier parts of the cake. Depends how big it'll be; you could get away with not using extra boards during assembly if it isn't going to be too big.
As for using the actual dowels and cake boards, I admit that it is currently wayyyy out of my league, but here are some links that may help, or at least hold clues:

Hope this helps! But the best bet would be the fence idea as the first person mentioned. Gives you a chance to do bonus decoration, even if the fence is inedible/from cardboard, and will make the cake look even more fantastic!
