letting a child eat on the floor?

my son is 9mos old, and he hates sitting in his high chair, so we use a plastic play mat on the floor, and put his food on it, so he can eat as he pleases and still explore around him. he wont keep it in a bowl, we even got the ones that stick down, but he still manages to tip it over.

is this so wrong? my MIL said *I* am letting him eat like a dog. despite the fact that he isn't (they keep it in their bowls! lol!) and his father had as much say as i did in it!
oh he is self feeding

We commonly picnic on the floor when we eat. Somehow, this works better for our family to sit around a blanket on the floor and eat rather than at a table. I don't every really think of it as "eating on the floor", but "picnicing" somewhere. Really, it isn't a huge deal, in my opinion. If you're keeping your floors clean, there is very little difference between playing with toys on the floor, chewing on them, playing with them some more, and eating on the floor. It's not like you're dumping his food on the floor and making him eat it like that.

For us, I really like spreading out a towel or old blanket on the floor and using it as a pseudo table. This way I can remind Alex to keep his food on the blanket.

Edit: I think it is interesting that people think proper table manners can only be taught at a table. It is just as easy to teach proper "table" manners while sitting on the floor.
