I need advice on some cleaning my chefs jacket?
First of all, Dry cleaners new where I live for some strange reason won't clean my jacket and laundry mats cost more than dry cleaning. So im stuck with cleaning my chefs jackets and aprons at home. They have the usual grease stains what can be removed but the dark carbon stains are a pain to remove. ID there some easy "something" I can use to get these and all stains out? Not just this but for all my whites?
I've worked in restaurants for many years. I've found a fool proof way to clean chef coats. Even my old chef coats still look new.
1) Fill a spray bottle with warm water. Spray the stains as soon as you get home with the water.
2) Use "Shout Ultra Gel" after the stains are saturated with the warm water. Let it sit 5 min. or longer. (This can be done one week in advance. That way, you can do all your chef coats in one load.)
3) Look at the garment label and use the hottest water possible. Fill your machine up, add detergent and a scoop of OxiClean. Put your chef coats in and shut the machine off. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, wash as usual.
Keep repeating these steps until the stains are gone. Do not dry them until the stains are gone. Dryers will bake stains into the fabric.
Never wash white clothes with colored clothes. This will make them dingy.
As far as carbon is concerned, it is very hard to come out. Uniform stores sell stain removers that are supposed to get it out. I've never used it. Someone told me "Simple Green" will work. "Rit Dye" makes a whitener. That might work. Also, making a paste out of OxiClean and spreading into the carbon stain is supposed to work (one of my chef friends uses this method).
You may want to consider using black aprons instead of white. I use black bib aprons that never show the stains and they protect my chef coats. Also, I have about 20 chef coats. It is a one month supply and I only have to wash each coat once a month. They stay a lot brighter and whiter.
