Can you really take out contacts by squeezing your eyelids together to make them pop out?
I've worn glasses for about 8 years now, and I'm going back for my second year of college. Basically I'm sick of wearing glasses, so around August 1st, I'm going to go to the eye doctor to get clear contacts. I'm nearsighted.
I've been watching alot of youtube videos of people putting in contacts and taking them out...and I'm uneasy about taking them out. Although I'm uncomfortable with touching my eyes, I can move my finger (when holding open my eye lids) pretty close to my eyeball (without touching it!) and not blink. I don't think putting them in will be TOO difficult to me. It's the whole "stick your finger in there and pinch it off" thing that's bothering me
I've been reading up on it, and some people say just pinching your eyelids together will squeeze the contact right out. Is this true? Has anyone tried it?
Furthermore, if it does work...when I go to the eyedoctor, will they make me take it out the "regular way" before letting me go home with them?
That's a trick for hard or gas permeable contacts, but it doesn't work with soft lenses. They sort of suction to the eye in a different way, and you have to remove them differently. What you do to remove soft lenses is gently touch the bottom of the lens, slide it a bit off center to the flatter part of your eye to break the suction, and pinch & lift. Some people sweep the lens to the outside corner of the eye, which wrinkles it up and makes it easier to pinch. There are lots of techniques, and you'll find what works for you.
Continue practicing with touching your eye. Wash your hands well and put a drop of sterile saline on the tip of the index finger of your dominant hand. Use the other hand to hold your eye open and practice touching the white of your eye, just under the iris, with the drop of saline. Your goal is to overcome the blink reflex and any fear about touching your eye. It's not too difficult, but it does take practice. You can also see an actual training video at the Vistakon website, which is the manufacturer of the Acuvue line of contacts. I'm not saying that's the best lens or manufacturer, but they do have some videos that are useful for new wearers. Some doctors also have a CD-ROM or DVD to give to patients, so be sure to ask. I'm not sure about the quality or veracity of YouTube, so take all those recommendations with a grain of salt.
