I have two chinchillas. I want to know why their tails are bristle-like?
I have been asked this often. I can not find the answer in my chinchilla books, or anywhere on the internet. Being the tail is in such sharp contrast to their coat, I would love to know the use of the course tail.

It is probably used for two main reasons. One is two literally dust their trail as they walk, which makes it harder for predators to track them. The other reason might be for pollination of plants. Squirrels' tails for example are what many plants depend on to procreate, since pollen or seeds get stuck in the tail, and fall off later.
It is also used to balance, so perhaps a dense furred tail would be heavier or something.
I thought of another purpose, like rats, having skin-exposed tails allows them to regulate their body temperature. This woul not be possible with dense fur, so it does need to be quite sparce.
