How do I mix paint to make the perfect custom color?
I am painting my house interior with minimal funds so I am using paint that I already had around the house. Does anyone know how to mix paint colors to get the color I am looking for. For example, yellow and blue make green.
It can be tricky, mixing your own colours. Mixing two strong colours is hardest, because if the colours are not true yellow and blue, for instance, you can get a pretty awful muddy colour when you mix them. Easiest and most successful is adding small amounts of colour to white or very light colours, but it does take a good eye for colour to get it right. Take it slow with adding the colours and mix well before deciding to add more. You can successfully add acrylic craft paints to latex house paint, but that can add up in price unless you're doing a pastel colour. Always add the darker colour to the lighter one, especially with red or black. They can ruin a colour with only small amounts, but it takes an enormous amount of yellow to change a white paint to light yellow. It's often smart to mix two colours in a third container so you can see what will happen without wrecking a whole can of paint. Large plastic buckets with lids are good for this. And do I need to tell you to only mix water-based paint with water-based, or oil with oil? Check labels before you mix.
You can go to the paint store and find out how the colours on the paint chips are arrived at. There are often codes on the chips that tell you what colours went into the one you like. It can be a surprise; I have a favourite colour of grey on the outside of my house which has red and blue in it so it's on the purple side but you can't tell that till you put it beside other greys. Your basic off-white wall colour is usually a very pale orange(red and yellow) with a tiny hint of black.
Try your new colour on the wall and let it dry before committing yourself to it. Dry it with a hair dryer or heat gun, but not too close. Colours can change when they dry, usually getting darker.
One source of cheap paint is off-tints sold at often 1/3 the original price. Home Depot and other places that sell a lot of paint often have these. Your colour will show up if you're patient. If you have a Habitat for Humanity store(called Restore) around, they may have very cheap paint. I just buy all the white latex I can get, doesn't matter what sheen as long as it averages out to what I want, and add colour to that.
