This is a car I have been "dreaming" of purchasing since they started out in the nineties. This triple black combination doesn't show up too often around here. Cosmetically, there are alot of scratches in the chrome, some of the body and on the rims. There was, at one point, a rip in the cover but has been patched together (A battle wound I would call it).
Inside, it seems okay, there is only a tape player and it is obviously a used car. The 'check engine' light was on and they said they would fix it.
What I am thinking of doing is, offering them the option of fixing the check engine light and proving that it has been fixed not just temporarily. If they can prove that to me, I would put an offer of $9995. Should I offer lower? Higher? Any suggestions or comments will be appreciated and anyone who has a similar beetle would be great! Thanks!
Given the number of issues, it does not seem to me that this car has been well maintained, and it has several issues requiring attention. I would not pay a penny over $9,000, and I would not buy it at all without a carfax report. Don't let your emotions get in the way of clear judgement here. This car is probably worth $8,000 at best, and personally, if the seller were to refuse $8,000, I would just walk away and consider myself lucky to be rid of all the things needing fixed. You should certainly get a price quote from the dealer for fitting an OEM convertible cover, just so you know how much it would cost to make the car look right for you.
Also worthy of note, at 66,000 miles, the timing belt should have been changed at 60K, and given the poor condition, it seems unlikely that anyone paid to do this. Make sure, when you make your decision, to plan to have it done immediately if there is no record of it (a VW dealership may be able to look up their computer records to check this), and change the water pump and thermostat at the same time (failure of either, or both may be imminent, if historic data is true, and it will leave you on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck, possibly even causing permanent damage to your engine if you do not notice immediately and stop the car almost instantly). This will also involve a coolant change. It just makes so much sense to do all three of these things at the same interval as the timing belt.
The total for this very necessary repair in Los Angeles at the dealerhsip, would be in the region of $750 to $1,100, when included with a 10,000 mile maintenance service. After that, you would still not have addressed any of the other issues.
Also, the car should have a cassette AND dash-load single CD player. They were standard on this model (and all U.S. Volkswagens of that period, as far as I know). You may even have the option to add a changer in the trunk as well: the wiring and supports may already be there (they are in our 2003 base model Golf).
