Seniors, what unsanitary practices would be outlawed today?
My first job was at a Dairy Queen. This is how we made Dilly Bars, I swear. You'd take a piece of plywood, about three square feet. You would use the soft serve ice cream to make little flat circles, then add the DQ curl, and a popsicle stick. The pieces of plywood would then be put into the deep freeze for an hour or so, then you'd take a hammer and whack the back of the plywood so all the frozen ice cream would fall to the bottom of the freezer. Then you'd gather up all the pieces, dip them in chocolate or butterscotch and throw them in a Dilly Bar wrapper. We never used gloves and I remember often licking my fingers, it was cold work! Doesn't that sound nasty today? What did you do that would be considered outrageous today?
If you ate a Dilly Bar at the Dairy Queen at Kensington MetroPark 40 years ago and got sick, it was probably my fault. I'm sorry.
I agree with Mr Grean. I also know doctors who say that a lot of illness today is down to the amount of anti-bacterial gunk that is everywhere. It does not just kill of the bad bacteria. The good bacteria we need to maintain a healthy immune system is also killed of. This leaves us (especially kids) prone to more infections and allergies. These kids grow up with weakened immune systems, then have their own kids and do not have enough immunity to pass on to their babies.
When I was a kid we used to go help ourselves to milk straight from the cow out in the field if we were peckish. We thought nothing of drinking water straight out of the river. We would pull a carrot or turnip straight out of the field, rinse it in the river and eat it (had to be forced to eat them cooked) We could pick fruit of a tree and eat it because they were not sprayed with chemical insecticide or fungicide.
It was common to see dogs in restaurants, shops and pubs with their owners. We thought nothing of seeing a cat sitting on a work top in the kitchen, or sleeping in the cool oven of the range if the door was left open. It was actually a must do thing to check there was no cat in the oven before the door was shut. Chickens also came in the kitchen looking for crumbs it the outside door was left open and had to be shooed out. Also if one of the working dogs on the farm had puppies, They were always whelped and brought up in the walk in larder. The cats preferred to raise their kittens in the vegetable cellar.
I sometimes wonder if it might be better to outlaw some sanitary practises. LOL
