At my local grocery store they sell Coke in 3 sizes at the following prices....
1.25 litre $1.79
1.5 litre $3.99
2 litre $2.69
does something look odd with those prices? its because the 1.5 litre bottle is in the fridge and the others are not., this means that its almost exactly twice the cost per litre as the 2 litre bottle, now I can understand why somebody would prefer a cold drink over one at room temperature, of course its only cold if you drink it straight away, if you take it home and put it in the fridge you are just paying twice the price, where is that extra cost coming from, is it electricity for the refrigeration, that seems like a lot to pay, its about the same price for keeping it cold as what the item cost on the shelf, there is no way I would pay that, I would rather drink it at room temperature than pay double price, have you ever seen anything like that?
Pricing in grocery stores is highly studied and can get rather complicated. Yes, they are factoring in refrigeration cost. The fact that a 2 litre bottle is a common food staple also plays a part. 2 litre soda bottles are usually purchased with a cart full of groceries, whereas cold 1.5 litre bottles are usually purchased by a thirsty individual with few other groceries. The regular shoppers will realize that a 2 litre bottle in Store 1 is $2.69 but in Store 2 it's $2.59. The thirsty person doesn't make that sort of comparison. So, the grocery store is willing to take less profit, or even lose money on the 2 litre bottle to get the customer in the store who will buy a cart full of groceries. They will take a higher profit margin on the size a thirsty individual will purchase.
