Can I leave my external hard drive plugged in but not connected?
Like can I leave it plugged into the power but leave it disconnected until I need it? My sister just bought a 1TB hard drive, works great, turned off the computer and went to boot it up again and wouldnt do crap. So I unplugged the hard drive and it booted up. Is it ok if I just leave it plugged into the power socket and then disconnect or connect when I want to?
It shouldn't harm the drive to leave it on or plugged into power (though you might want to be sure it's plugged into a surge protector, but it should be anyway). Regarding the booting difficulty, maybe it got confused and tried to boot from the external drive, though it ought to see there's nothing bootable and move on. BIOSes can do weird things, though: I have an old DVD-ROM drive on my machine that seems to cause long delays in the boot process, but isn't a serious problem.
