How to develop good character,self discipline and good humor.?
This is an extremely good question and like Francis Bacon's essays it is cryptic but each of the important aspect deserves a different and clear answer :
1) Wardsworth says ,' Child is the father of man.' ie. the character of a child expresses in the later man. We probably cnnot correct the character of a man. Sri Ramakrishna paramahansa says that the character of man is like a dog's tail. You cannot change. However the Mother and Sri Aurobindo say thta it can be changed though it demands painful and rigorous work over oneself for years before even a small part changes in us.
Developing a good character is part of Vital Education, and so far no system of education has even taken it as part of its carriculam . Actually our education should start with vital Education and physical Education.
The vital Education has two parts :
a) Training of the senses.
b) Changing of character.
2) Self discipline forms part of our physical education, as continuance of endurance, - part of vital education as a part of character both individual as well as national ; andfinally part of our mental education , - ie .training all the part of mental faculties ratinally and in a disciplined way.
3) Good humour is of course like a sauce of life and must form part of our life where ever we go.
In the physical education we have to develop a sporting spirit which demands a good humour to accept defeat with smiling face. Our character should be such thatwe see always humorous and funny situation like Prince Hussein saw, even when he was defeated in battle. In the morning his personal paraphernalia and food material were carried by 300 camels but in the evening lo a stray dog carried away the only piece of meat that he had . But he saw the humour in the situation and laughed.
it is practice , good-will, hard work and being in the company of wise and great people that we are changed.
