Is there ever a case where a bank is not aware of a POS card transaction until it is submitted for payment?
I did a POS (point of sale) purchase on my checking account for a guest house a friend and I were staying at. The card was swiped for the exact amount, an authorization given, and I signed the reciept.
The entire weekend I kept track of my available balance to make sure I didn't over spend. Every card transaction i've ever done the funds were put on hold immediately and reflected in my available balance even though it didn't clear for a couple days. It was my understanding that once the card gets that authorization, the bank is aware of the transaction as it went through to verify in the first place. The funds are then placed on hold until everything is batched out and the receipt submitted for payment.
Well, a couple days later the charge posted, however, the bank never reflected the pre-authorization in the days prior. How is this possible?
The bank is insisting they do not always know about a POS purchase until submitted for payment, and I say this is BS. Am I right?
No, you arent.
It sounds like the merchant didnt do an authorization, but a full blown "charge" to the card. It would take 24-72 hours to post, and there wouldnt be an "authorization" out there to see.
The bank is absolutely correct that sometime they dont see the charge until it actually hits.
With my business, I accept major credit cards and they are all point of sale. I transmit the card charge and the batch in the same day, so there wouldnt be any advanced notice for anything I entered either.
The bank is right on this one....
I would be more concerned as to why you would have the need to track every penny of charge at all times. This indicates to me, a dis-interested party, that you are going down a road that might get you in credit trouble with your methods of using credit....
