If other countries are subsidizing their auto industries does it not make sense for the US government to help?
Hold the automakers accountable (no more huge executive bonuses etc.), reign in the unions and suppliers, but give the US auto industry a chance to improve their products and compete with the other countries and thereby support our internal economy.
Is a line of credit with a car czar holding the purse strings the best way to go ?
A chance to improve their products? These companies have been making cars for a hundred years. GM is still the biggest automaker in the world and Ford is in the top 5. They have unlimited access to the world's biggest and most lucrative auto market and they have the history, dealer network and blind unwavering loyalty of millions no matter how faulty is their product . And they have lost market share for over 35 years in a row.
Ever hear of British Leyland? Up to the seventies, they were the British motor industry. No matter the subsidies given out, they died.
American automaking needs bankruptcy and a fresh start.
