Help please..A tablecloth measures 96in by 72in.Its laid on tabletop with area of 5040inches^2 square..and?
hangs over edge by same amount on all sides. By how may inches does cloth hang over edge?
h = height of part of cloth that hangs over on each side
area of table top = (96 - 2h)(72 - 2h) = 5040
let x = 2h for simplicity:
(96 - x)(72 - x) = 5040
6912 - 168h + x² = 5040
x² - 168x + 1872 = 0
discriminant = 186² - 4*1872 = 144²
x = 168/2 - 144/2 = 12
so h = x/2 = 6
answer: cloth hangs 6 inch over table at all sides.
