why does steel is often coated in a layer of grease b4 being placed in long term storage?
Steel contains iron in it.
So when left exposed to air , it forms an oxide called iron oxide as it reacts with water vapour and oxygen.
This is a wasteful reaction and the iron oxide so formed breaks easily and this is called 'rust'.
This results in the completely wastage of steel.
the reaction is as follows :-
Fe + x H2O +Oxygen = Fe2O3 (rust)
When it is coated with grease, the steel can no more come in contact with the water vapour and oxygen.
So it is covered with grease.
