how do I open an old gum ball machine without a key?
..its a northwestern. I dont want to bust it.
Find a lock or security newsgroup on the Web, and ask there. There are few locks that cannot be picked. At worst, you may have to drill the lock cylinder out, but there are good ways and bad ways to do this. I don't believe that the keys are very complex, but I'm not sure.
Of course you should not break it.
One more thought: ask an antique dealer who deals in these machines if he has any thoughts on the subject. One way would be to check out similar machines on eBay and find out who works with them. You might even find a key.
