My Fem. friend is on disability and wants to open a bakery with me. Are there grants for her to get in IN?
She is on disability and I will be doing the labor part. She wants to invest her meger settlement on opening a bakery/catering business. I already own a DJ business but have no credit for loans. She has no credit either. I know it is easier for females to get gov. grants. How do we get them? We live in Indiana.
The great majority of grants go to non-profit organizations or businesses that have already been going for a while.
Grant funders look for business sustainability. They want to make sure that their donated funds will not go to waste. So they look for businesses and organizations that have experience and have a track record.
The first questions that you need to ask yourselves is do you have experience running a business? Do you have experience running a bakery? Is there a need for a bakery/ catering company where you are? Have you done a market survey? Have you worked out a budget? Do you have enough funds to carry the business for at least a year? (You may be able to get a grant for equipment but not operating costs or vice versa.) These are all questions that will have to be answered in your grant proposal so you may as well start hitting them now.
Check at your local library for The Foundation Directory. That lists all the foundations that give out grants in the US. You can also go to cfda.gov to find government grants. Try to find a grant that closely matches what you want to do. You may find a grant for equipment. You may find a grant for a location. Many times you have to cobble grants together to cover part or most of your expenses. Most grants arent one-shot deals that will cover every aspect of funding your business.
