Donnie Darko- What is the significance of Cherita Chen?
I've watched this movie several times and have gotten the philosophy down, well most of it, but it still leaves me with some questions. Of all these questions, the one that bothers me the most is the role of Cherita Chen. Donnie interacts with her and she gets a lot of screen time, but very little is revealed about her or her role in helping Donnie. Some scenes that stick out are when she is wearing ear muffs, when she runs away after Donnie lifts her earmuff off and says "Everything is going to be okay" and finally, when she is sitting outside after her talent show performance, looking up at the sky.
Among the many theories out there, there is an alien theory that ties much of this together, saying Cherita is an alien and is watching over Donnie to make sure he gets the job done. However, it seems a strech, since she never talks to him and never once helped him.
She is a mystery. Any ideas on her significance?
She represents the weak people of the world whom Donnie is saving and dying for. He promises that things will be better for her. She is the one closest to Donnie in that her pain mirrors his own, the world does not want Cherita Chen, the world does not want Donnie Darko yet he is the one who must save the world.
