A manufacturer produces custom steel products from recycled steel in which each ton of the product must contain 4 pounds of chromium, 8 pounds of tungsten, and 7 pounds of carbon. The manufacturer has three sources of recycled steel:
•Source 1: Each ton has 2 pounds of chromium, 8 pounds of tungsten, and 6 pounds of carbon.
•Source 2: Each ton has 3 pounds of chromium, 9 pounds of tungsten, and 6 pounds of carbon.
•Source 3: Each ton has 12 pounds of chromium, 6 pounds of tungsten, and 12 pounds of carbon.
Find the correct percentage of each source that must be used to produce exactly one ton of product using an appropriate system of equations
Explain why any of the equations you used above can be replaced by a normalization equation such as x + y + z = 1.
let's say you gotta use x ton of source 1, y ton of source 2 and z ton of source 3
then firstly, x + y + z = 1 -------- A
for source 1, 1 ton has 2 pounds of chromium
therefore, x ton has 2x pounds of chromium
this gives a total amount of chromium in pounds equal to:
2x + 3y + 12z
the amount you need is 4 pounds
so, 2x + 3y + 12z = 4 --------- B
similarly,
8x + 9y + 6z = 8 ---------- C
6x + 6y + 12z = 7 ----------- D
subtract 6*A from D
6z = 1
z = 1/6
subtract 8*A from C
y - 2z = 0
y = 2z = 2*1/6 = 2/6
use this in A
x + 2/6 + 1/6 = 1
x = 1 - 3/6 = 3/6 = 1/2
(gee, i guess that "normalization equation" is pretty useful)
now convert to percentages
x = 1/2 = 50%
y = 2/6 = 1/3 = 33.33%
z = 1/6 = 16.67%
