What are the most important things to know when being a waiter/server ?
I start tomorrow being a server at a restaurant and brewery. Seems like a good job with profit potential for a college student like myself. From those with or without experience, what do you wish you would have known when you started that you now know?
These are some most important thing and I may get jumped all over for this but I think that it is important to remember a few things.
1. This is the job that you chose to do, and anything that you ever do you should do to the best of your abilities.
2. You can not make everyone happy, some people are easy to please, some harder, and some you just can not seem to make happy.
3. Do not ever think that you know all that there is to know about your craft, and I say craft because waitressing/serving is a craft.
4. Be pleasant and smile even when you are having a bad day, it will show in your money.
5. Ask your co-workers questions. I am a training waitress and I tell my trainees all the time," I would rather you ask me a thousand questions to avoid making a simple mistake, than to not ask me anything and make those thousand mistakes."
6. The pad and pen are your friend. Nothing makes a customer more nervous than a waiter/ess who tries to impress then by memorizing their order only to forget something or totally screws it up.
7.Take your time. You are new at this and speed comes with experience.
8. Have fun and be personable, you never know who it is that you are waiting on or who you will meet.
9. Learn to listen. Sometimes it isn't what the customer is telling you but what they aren't
10. Do not be afraid to admit that you are new to this once you are able to get on the floor. It allows more leniency from the customer
I hope you have fun with your experience and good luck and I hope you make a lot of money and meet a lot of new people.
