My bit idea. Will this work?
Will this work? I run barrel on a bull-headed appaloosa mare, who never quite learned to give at the poll. I was wondering if this will work. As you draw the reins, the red (see url pic) will put pressure on the horses nose. When you release, so will the pressure on the horses nose. This is nothing like a hackamore combo, its is a moveable add- on to any shanked bit. A. It won't tighten as you imagine it will. the noseband part will loosen when the reins are pulled back.
B. the concept is a gimmick to save you the bother of training your horse. Shame on you.
Go back to a simple snaffle (the definition of snaffle is rings instead of shanks, direct pressure not leverage. It is NOT a jointed mouthpiece.) Get some lessons to help you learn how to teach the horse to respond to a basic bit.
There are already too many gimmicky bits, and they are all for the same purpose - allowing a lesser rider to force a horse to perform in a pale imitation of the way it should, and usually in a lot of pain too.
I do know the fun of inventing and designing 'new' tack. I have made rope halters with lots of design tweaks, and made my own sidepulls and other mild hackamores. I even fooled with making soft, flexible bits. They worked with my horse, but then I could ride her with anything or nearly nothing.
Please put your creativity toward learning how to use a snaffle correctly and teach your horse. Lay off the speed work until you and your horse know how to go,stop, and turn without fighting each other, or needing to resort to gimmicky ways to cause your horse more pain.
While I agree with the rest of Ron's answer, I take exception to the suggestion of a Tom Thumb bit. They are not clear communication tools, and they put a horse's mouth in a vise grip with the jointed mouthpiece and the shanks creating leverage in several directions. And it most certainly not the most commonly used bit, even in the USA, much less the rest of the world. I doubt that it is even the most popular western bit. If it is, it doesn't deserve to be. It's not a good tool.
