Why do pepole think that staneless is good blade matierial?
It is not. A sword made from stainless wont rust. But it wont hold an edge either. A solid Iron core blade with a welded steel edge can slice right through it. (Yes fellow Mythbuster fans, it is possible. I have done it three times.) After a time of using it, the blade will warp. So why do pepole think that an alloy for Cooking Equipment, is also good for a weapon?
Consider that the American Iron and Steel Institute recognizes over 70 different standard compositions of ‘stainless steel’, and there are probably five times that number when you consider non-US designations and trademarked alloys. I think it’s easy to realize that this large family of alloys covers a wide range of properties. Indeed, 316L is a great material for lining a beer truck, because it has fine corrosion resistance, with ready weldability: but it would make a poor blade. I’m not surprised you could slice through it with a sword made from mild steel with a hardfaced edge. (“Hardfacing” is what the practice of laying a hard weld bead onto a surface is called.)
Yet a martensitic stainless steel blade, say a 420 grade, properly hardened, would be a formidable piece. The edge would be only about Rockwell C 55, but the core would be tough. If I wanted a keener edge, I’d use 440C, an alloy used in cutlery and many, many industrial parts that need to resist corrosion and keep a sharp edge. By induction hardening the edge after hardening and overtempering the core to roughly Rc 40, I’d have something that would dent, perhaps shatter, or otherwise ruin your homemade iron/welded edge weapon.
If I didn’t care about expense, I’d go for a carburized grade of stainless steel, such as Latrobe’s CSS-422 or Carpenter’s Pyrowear 675. With those, you can get a composition gradient, part of the secret of why Samurai swords were such marvels. Such a blade would be fully functional, and REASONABLY corrosion resistant. It’ll stand up to common industrial atmospheres, but it will surface rust if you keep it exposed to seawater.
