Can Hydrogen gas go through stainless steel?
A senior sales representative of a large chemical company recently said to me that hydrogen gas, if produced, will penetrate a particular stainless steel tank. He said this is because the hydrogen atom is so small that it will go straight through the 0.5inch stainless steel sides. Is this possible / probable? also, If this is the case, what material is used to contain hydrogen gas? Thank you in advance.
Yes, but, it is not an H2 molecule that penetrates, its the Ions H(+) particles that will go through. The molecule is too large.
Working in the Oil and Gas Industry for many years, in pipelines and vessels that have H2S in the gas and/or crude oil, there is a reaction between the iron in the metal, moisture and the H2S.
This produces FeS (iron Sulphide), and Hydrogen
The Hydrogen forms (H+) Ions which, not only penetrate but, If any tiny striations are present in the metal, the Ions, as they enter the tiny spaces, combine into H2 and are trapped there.
This process, over time, will cause a tremendous pressure to build up in the metal causing 'Hydrogen Blisters' (Bulges in the pipe walls) which can lead to disastrous equipment failure.
In the process operations where this occurs, vessels are internally coated with an Epoxy Resin to counteract the Hydrogen and pipelines have a special substance injected into the flowing products that coats the internal walls of the pipe. Corrosion inhibitors are also injected into these systems.
Hydrogen gas as H2 is quite safe to store in the appropriate pressure vessel.
