How big of a welder do I need to weld 3/8" steel in a single pass?
Have a Hobart 125 right now. Going to be building trailers and need to be able to handle 5/16" and 3/8" steel in a single pass. Looking at the Hobart 187 right now and have read specs on manufacturing website, but want another opinion. Do I need to go higher? Willing to look into Stick and MIG so how what size will i need for both?
If you are intending to weld something as thick as 3/8" I would strongly advise against the Hobart 187. Hobart claims it puts out 130 amps at it's highest setting. For 3/8 inch material.........130 amps is a joke!
Ideally you want to be using around 240-280 amps, 28-30 volts, and 600 inches per minute wire feed speed, for 3/8" plate. (note these settings should be used in the flat or horizontal only.)
The number of passes you use isn't what you should be worried about here.
You need to be asking "Am I able to achieve good weld fusion and penetration on the FIRST pass, for this thickness? Or, will my my welds have lack-of-fusion and only marginal penetration?" A multi-pass weld is useless if you're covering up one bad weld with more bad welds.
Here's my philosophy- Until you start burning through, most welds will benefit from MORE current and more weld energy. In the case of MIG welding, higher current also implies a greater wire feed speed, which means you will be able to lay down weld faster, pure and simple. Welding machines are not your greatest business expense, your greatest expense by far is labor. Therefore it always pays to invest in equipment which will allow you to maximize your weld deposition rate.
I //always// recommend a MIG welder that is capable of at least 300 amps, regardless of the material thickness or application. Since you intend to be doing thicker materials on a regular basis a 400 amp CV power source is even better. Such a machine will simply last longer, making it worth the extra expense.
My preferences are ESAB or Thermal Arc equipment. Miller is second, though miller has a bad habit of not properly testing new equipment. Lincoln and Hobart which is owned by lincoln, are distant thirds; Lincoln has been involved in some rather shady product liability issues in the 90's and early 00's and I get the sense that they're OK with suckering their customers.
EDIT: Stick welding is extremely slow, dirty, and requires a lot of skill and experience. MIG welding is fast, easy, clean and much more cost-effective. Stick welding doesn't belong in a shop environment.
