What is a good legitimate certification to become a personal trainer in the United States?
And in Florida specifically?
Are they currently in demand, and what's their average pay?
AFAA is a very reputable organization and is prevelant in Florida...Others are AFPA, and APTA.
Fitness trainers will always have good demand especially as our nation's obesity sky rockets. However, your success lies heavily on your personality and ability to attract clients through skill, knowledge, and passion. Gyms or companies may hire you quickly but you will not move up in the corporate ladder or have the ability to start your own business if you cannot develop new clients on your own and maintain those given to you. A large portion of this lies in your ability to encourage and motivate strangers while pouring your knowledge and experience into them to help them attain their goals.
Typical salaries are between 25K and 50K a year. This would not include owning a personal training business.
One of the best ways for you to 'move in' to your career is to spend as much time as possible getting lean, muscular, and healthy in a high quality gym. Get to know the staff and be personable with those around you. As you begin studying for your certification, make sure some gym staff know your desire to work there as a personal trainer when you get certified. It may also help to apply for a low level job before you're certified so you can be 'bumped into' a personal trainer position.
Make friends, get very healthy and fit, study hard, and be active in the fitness industry. You'll do great!
