Hosting a foreign visitor?
This winter, my family would be hosting a foreign college student in our home for a month. I met him online, but he has provided up with legal documents (ID, birth certificate, voter registration, and military registration) and will be getting a VISA and passport along with government approval for being here. (He is from Brazil if that makes a difference) I am wondering though, what liabilities does my family, as the host family, hold for the student? What would happen if he were to get hurt, or get sick, things like that. What would my family be held countable for? And what other steps should be taken to ensure the safety of my family, besides the ones that have otherwise been taken?
If you're working with an organization, that should have all been explained before you agreed to host him. If this is a private arrangement (which I suspect is true because you say "I met him online"), that is something that you and he will need to work out. If he's a college student, I would assume that he is over 18 and, therefore, legally an adult, making him responsible for himself. As for the safety of your family, that's difficult to say not knowing how much you know about each other.
I know this isn't a great answer, but it's really hard to comment on private arrangements.
