Refrigeration-related question. 12x8x8 foot walk in freezer, insulated with 8 inches on all sides of urethane,
having an R value of 6.7 per inch.
In my novel, there is no longer ANY electricity, and the people pack the freezer 90 % full with collected hail to preserve food.
Thus it is no longer a walk in 'refrigerator', but a walk in ICE BOX. About 700 cubic feet of ice, 8 inches on all sides of R-6.7 per inch insulation. Assume ambient temperature = 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
If they open the doors the minimum times daily to reduce warm air getting inside, HOW LONG WILL THE ICE LAST? They are trying to keep approximately 70 cubic feet of food frozen or at least cold enough to be safe.
I am trying to figure out how often it must hail to be feasible. Or should I provide an iceberg instead?
Will the ice last long enough to be useful? Should I use several smaller refrigerators, or fewer large ones? I can always change the size of the walk in units.

A = 2(12*8 + 8*8 + 8*12) = 16*32 = 512 ft^2
t = 8"
R = 8*6.7 = 53.6
The heat load is
Q = 512(75 - 32)/53.6 = 410.75 Btu/hr
12*8*8 = 768 ft³
so we're talking 68 ft³ food.
Assuming cubic close-pack, the 700 ft³ contains
(0.5235988)(700) = 366.5191 ft³ ice
(0.9167 g/cm³)(1.2 lb/1,000 g)(2.54 cm/in)³(1,728 in³/ft³) = 57.10772 lb/ft³
(366.5191 ft³)(57.10772 lb/ft³)(80Btu/lb) =
1,674,485 Btu
(1,674,485 Btu)/(410.75 Btu/hr) = 4,076.654 hours
= 169.86 days if the door is not opened.
The ice melt is approximately linear with time, and the 24-hr melt would be
(24 hr)(410.75 Btu/hr)/[(80Btu/lb)(57.10772 lb/ft³)] = 2.157764 ft³, so opening the door once every 24 hours lets in 2.157764 ft³ air at 75°
The heat capacity of air is
(1.0035 J/g°C)(1 cal/4.184 J)(2.2 lb/1000 g)(9°F/5°C) = 2.931405e-4 Btu/lb
(2.157764 ft³)(0.075 lb/ft³)(2.931405e-4 Btu/lb°F)(43 °F) = 0.002039903 Btu
This is negligible but, unfortunately, we must assume that ALL the air is replaced each time the door is opened.
(1 - 0.5235988)(700 ft³) = 333.48084 ft³
(333.48084 ft³)(0.075 lb/ft³)(2.931405e-4 Btu/lb°F)(43 °F) = 0.3152655 Btu/opening
That uses another 0.00006900676 ft³ ice per opening, which is still negligible, so your planning time is still about 169.8 days.
Unfortunately, you can't depend on a hailstorm in any locality in this period of time, but, then you should be able to supplement your food source by hunting & gathering, and perhaps your ice from not-so-far-away sources. At least it gives you time for salting and pickling.
The infamous cube-square law says that your ice boxes should be as large as possible. The iceberg is a cool idea (pun intended), but you still have to come up with plausible transport.
You could also have some genius come up with a crude ammonia refrigeration system for making ice. Tombstone, AZ had one when the Earps were there, and it wasn't driven by electricity.
